First of, Titan, Saturn’s largest moon and the second largest moon in our Solar System, is the best option for future colonization (not Mars!). The atmospheric pressure is similar to Earth’s, Titan has its own magnetic shield plus Saturn’s huge magnetic shield, protecting the moon from the solar wind. The rich atmosphere is mostly nitrogen and methane (plus propane and ethane) which makes it possible for humans to walk around with gas masks and little to no protection against radiation. Titan also has large lakes of liquid methane and a geology very similar to Earth’s.
On the downside, Titan’s average temperature is around and lower than -179 C, but in a nitrogen and methane rich atmosphere the temperature is felt differently by the human body compared to -179 C in an atmosphere like ours. For a methane rich world, Titan is almost exotic considering its temperature. There is a very long way ahead of us to even think about colonizing Titan, though at this point, life on Saturn’s moon is the best option for our future home. – Roman Alexander
